Marcus Oldham College is Australia's leading farm and equine business
management college with a national and international reputation for
quality education. Being independent allows our courses to be developed
in close consultation with industry and to incorporate new trends and
technologies into the teaching program that ensures our curriculum is
relevant to the needs of industry.
Our emphasis on business management provides skills that are readily
transferable across a wide range of careers, resulting in highly
employable graduates who are at the leading edge of their chosen fields.
Courses are delivered in small class sizes by lecturers who have
extensive commercial experience and can relate theory to practice. The
extensive use of national and international study tours provides
training not available by classroom tuition. Prominent industry leaders
are used throughout our courses to provide insight into a wide range of
current industry issues. This holistic approach to our education
programs ensures the development of the student.
Marcus Oldham College has been producing top level rural business
managers for over 40 years. Students come from all States of Australia
and overseas.
The College is a one hour drive south of Melbourne and situated on 200
hectares close to Geelong City centre, Deakin University and the Great
Ocean Road.
Most students who study full-time at Marcus Oldham College live on
campus in student residences which is a great way to be involved in
sporting and social activities, make long lasting friendships and form
valuable networks with colleagues. Accommodation for students is in
individual bed/study rooms with shared bathroom and laundry facilities.
For students studying for the Diploma of Horse Business Management there
is a
65m x 23m indoor riding arena, outdoor menage, round yard, stable block
and cross country course.
COURSES
RURAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
Marcus Oldham College offers premium courses in Farm Business
Management.
Bachelor of Business (Agricultural Management) - 4 years
Advanced Diploma of Farm Business Management - 3 years
This program has been specifically designed for people aiming for
professional management positions in all aspects of the rural industry.
Each course recognises that a manager of an agricultural business should
possess appropriate business management skills and be well trained in
all aspects of management production.
The structure of the course ensures students are no more than 12 months
away from the workplace.
The first year of the program is spent at the College learning the
principles of farm business management; this is followed by a year of
industry experience on a property or rural business. The third year of
study requires students to return to the College where they will learn
to apply the analytical and the decision making skills required in
managing a farm business. Students successfully completing this year
have the option to graduate with an Advanced Diploma of Farm Business
Management.
The Bachelor of Business (Agricultural Management) may be obtained by
successfully completing a further six units by external study on a full
or part time basis. Students may commence the final year at any time.
The course produces graduates with skills in eight key areas:
Integrated Management Studies, Farm Business Management, Human Resource
Management, Marketing Management, Information Management, Sustainable
Resource Management, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Production
Systems.
Bachelor of business (aGrIBUSINESS)
Agribusiness is the term given to the food and fibre industries. It
includes all activities involved in the production, processing and
distribution of food and fibre products. In an increasingly globalised
world, people with agribusiness skills are in high demand. Given
Australia's unique place within agricultural exports, a strong future
exists for trained Agribusiness managers and administrators.
The Agribusiness program has a choice of exit points:
Bachelor of Business (Agribusiness) - 3 years
Associate Degree of Agribusiness - 2 years
Diploma of Agribusiness - 1 year
The Marcus Oldham College Agribusiness programs open the door to a wide
and varied choice of careers including:
Agricultural Co-operatives, Marketing, Rural finance and banking,
Property Management, Rural Tourism, Agri-Politics, Farm Administration.
The Course covers seven broad areas:
Rural Accounting, Finance and Business Planning, Computer Applications
and Systems, Agricultural Economics , Policy and Law, Agribusiness
systems, Business and Personal Communications, Marketing Management,
Human Resource Management.
Study tours and work experience programs provide students with the
opportunity to examine a wide range of leading agribusiness throughout
Australia and internationally. Management techniques, business
philosophies, economic views, marketing strategies and administrative
practices are all important aspects of the course which students are
encouraged to explore.
DIPLOMA OF HORSE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
Internationally recognised by major sectors of the horse industry, the
Diploma of Horse Business Management aims to equip students with the
practical, husbandry and business skills necessary for a successful
career in their chosen area.
The intensive one year Diploma of Horse Business Management is
structured equally into three broad areas: practical skills, horse
management and business management.
Developed in close consultation with industry, students are exposed to a
diverse range of prominent leaders specialising in riding, training and
management techniques, business philosophies, economic views, marketing
strategies and administrative practices.
To ensure students have obtained essential horse management skills, all
students participate in the riding stream during the first half of the
course before having an opportunity to branch out and specialise in a
particular area of interest during the second semester.
While guest lectures are an important part of the course, equally
important is the insight students obtain from outside the College
grounds. Exciting study tour and work experience programs are a feature
of the course and allow students to visit and work with prominent
industry leaders and enterprises in both Australia and New Zealand.
Marcus Oldham College prides itself on having a reputation within
industry for producing graduates who have good management skills. The
close rapport the College has with industry ensures outstanding career
opportunities for graduates.
The 12 month course provides a wonderful opportunity to make important
networks and friendships with industry identities both nationally and
internationally.

positions in the racing, breeding and performance horse sectors.
