Study Applied Linguistics in AustraliaMaster of Applied Linguistics Melbourne UniversityThe Master of Applied Linguistics is a one-year program for graduate professionals working or planning to work in a range of areas such as TESOL, second/foreign language teaching, language program administration, and computer-assisted language learning. It provides a professional qualification and specialist training in the discipline, and may equip graduates for admission to doctoral study. It provides students with an understanding of key issues and research findings in applied linguistics, and with the skills to make substantial professional contributions to the field. Topics addressed in the program include second language acquisition, grammar and discourse, pronunciation, CALL in language programs, sociolinguistic aspects of language learning, world Englishes, language testing, language program evaluation, quantitative and qualitative research methods in applied linguistics, bi-linguialism and multilingualism. Students choose one of the following four tracks: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Language Testing and Program Evaluation, English Language. The program can be completed by coursework only (8 subjects), or by coursework and minor thesis (6 subjects and a 10,000 word thesis). Either option may be taken full-time or part-time; international students must complete the program full-time. The program can be taken up in Semester 1 (late February) or Semester 2 (late July), and there are currently no summer subjects or subjects taught through distance mode. The department provides supervision for higher degree students in diverse areas of specialised research and ensures the best possible resources, facilities and supervisory arrangements are available to students. The structure of postgraduate study is flexibly designed to cater for professional and academic interests across a number of areas of the discipline. In addition, as a student at Australia's second oldest university, you will find inspiration in the University's beautifully landscaped environment. A mixture of architecture incorporating original sandstone buildings, ivy covered brick buildings, and the modern steel and glass facade of the Asia Centre building, the campus provides an inspiring backdrop to your academic and social experience. The 22.5 hectare campus is just a short tram ride or 15 minute walk from the city centre. The main camps is adjacent to the inner city suburb of Carlton, renowned for its cosmopolitan and multicultural style with hundreds of shops, restaurants, cafes, clubs and bars.
