American International School, Dhaka


Founded in 1972, the American International School/Dhaka provides a comprehensive and challenging educational program, both inside and outside the classroom, to children from Pre-Kg to Grade 12. The school serves students from 35 countries, with teachers from 10 countries. The facilities include 64 classrooms, two libraries, five computer laboratories, six science laboratories, three gymnasiums, a multi-purpose room, a 400-seat theater, cafeteria, swimming pool and playing fields. The city of Dhaka has a large expatriate community, therefore AIS/D students come from diverse backgrounds. A large percentage of the parents are professional people working for embassies, the UN and a variety of international non-governmental organizations. The school year of 180 days is divided into two semesters. The first semester begins in the latter half of August and the second begins in January. Student grade reports are given quarterly. Classes are held Sunday through Thursday. The school day begins at 07: 45 and ends at 15: 10. Various after-school programs are sponsored by the school. These include sports, drama, music, art, dance, computer, special interest groups and social events. The school participates in the SAISA organization for international sports competitions and cultural exchanges and is a regular member of NESA for professional development.
