Canada's Open University - Quality Learning. Anywhere. Anytime.

Athabasca University We come to you, anywhere in the world

Athabasca University (AU) is Canada's largest university specializing in online and distance education. In 2004-2005, 32, 000 students living across Alberta, Canada and the world were completing AU courses and programs through online and distance learning as well as in classrooms at partner institutions.

We are dedicated to removing barriers that restrict access to and success in university-level studies and to increasing the quality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide.

AU offers more than 700 courses and 60 programs consisting of bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and undergraduate and graduate certificates and diplomas. We have hundreds of transfer arrangements with other institutions, many of which allow students to count their college diplomas toward AU degrees. We are also committed to prior learning assessment.

You can complete an entire program at AU or fast-track your program at another institution by taking courses through AU that transfer to your program.

My educational experience has been a journey. I discovered a lot about myself, including my strength, motivation and ability to persevere. I recommend AU to everyone!

How AU teaches

Individualized study. Most AU students take courses that allow them to decide when they will work on the course, submit assignments, and write exams. In other words, study is individualized. Students work through their printed and online learning resources at home, at work, or anywhere else they would like to study. Many courses begin on the first day of any month. Students usually have six months to complete a course, and throughout the course, they have access to qualified tutors.

Grouped study. Some students prefer the structure provided by working in a group. In grouped study courses, students work through a course on a pre-set schedule with a group of students in a classroom setting at partner institutions, online, or through some combination of both formats.

Student support

Our exceptional student support service sets us apart.

A network of academic staff, tutors, help desk personnel, support staff and others provide students with information and advice. Tutors give individualized academic help. Advisors assist in choosing courses and planning programs. Counsellors help chart career paths. Library staff give guidance on research and send books in the mail. These and a host of other student services can be accessed easily from one section inside AU's student portal.

It was just a great experience, from start to finish. Athabasca Universityhas provided support like a family. And they provide all the resources you require to pursue your dreams of obtaining a degree.

The International Council for Open and Distance Education awarded us an Institutional Prize of Excellence in 2004.

Also in 2004, for the second year in a row, our online MBA program was ranked as one of the top 75 MBA programs in the world by the Financial Times of London, U.K.

A recent survey indicated that 98.5 per cent of our graduates would recommend us to others and that 93 per cent were satisfied with the overall quality of their educational experience with Athabasca University.*
