Our ELC is one the largest
language departments in Canada, with 40 years of experience offering
English programs on campus at the University of Victoria, a medium-sized
university located in the west-coast city of
Victoria , British Columbia. UVic consistently ranks among the
Top Comprehensive Universities in Canada for excellence in
teaching, degree programs and research. Approximately 19, 000 degree
students and 2500 ELC students study at UVic each year.
About the ELC
The English Language Centre is located in one of
UVic's newest buildings, equipped with 16 classrooms and 2 computer
listening labs. ELC students attend classes throughout campus and have
unlimited access to computer and language laboratories, libraries and
recreational facilities, allowing them to become part of an exciting
student community.
ELC programs offer 20-30 class hours per week for
high beginner to university preparation-level English students. All of
our instructors are university graduates with international teaching
experience.
Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of
international students, and each instructor is dedicated to creating a
friendly and supportive environment inside the classroom. Small class
sizes guarantee that each student receives lots of personal attention in
class.
UVic is a beautiful, friendly and relaxed place to
study, featuring
modern facilities on a park-like campus full of gardens and
wildlife. As ELC student Juliana Souza says, Walking around UVic one
can find gardens with the most beautiful flowers and also huge sport
complexes, fitness centres, a movie theatre and pubs.
Social
and Cultural Activities
Outside of classes, ELC programs include a free
activity calendar, as well as activities offered at an additional cost,
to ensure that our students can practise their English in real life
with each other, and with Canadians. The ELC has a staff of Cultural
Assistants (CAs) to organize and lead these activities on campus and
around Victoria. CAs are Canadian students who, along with host
families, teachers, and the ELC staff, are there to help our students
feel like Victoria is their home away from home.
Students receive a calendar of activities and events
at the beginning of their program.
