The school encourages intellectual curiosity and independent, critical and creative thinking, with a view to allowing all students to achieve their full potential.
The Primary school, Reception-Year 6 (US Pre-Kindergarten-Grade 5), offers a dual-language programme in which all students learn to read, write and speak both English and Chinese to age-appropriate levels. Apart from Chinese, core subjects are taught in English only, but other subjects are taught through the medium of both languages.
In the Secondary school, Years 7-13 (US Grades 6-12), all students undertake the IB Middle Years Programme in Years 7-11 and the IB Diploma Programme examinations. The school has an excellent record of success in the Diploma Programme and students are regularly accepted at leading colleges and universities throughout the world. The medium of instruction in the Secondary school is English, although Chinese is a required subject for all students. There are special classes for students who enter the secondary school with limited or no Chinese background.
The student body is comprised of children of diverse national, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Some 28 nationalities are represented in the student body. The school offers a wide range of co-curricular activities, including a full-range of sports, a lively performing and fine arts program, debating and Model United Nations teams, etc. An arts and languages center houses a video and sound-editing studio, two drama studios, two music studios, six practice rooms, four art studios, one dance studio and exhibition areas. Other facilities include a 200-seat auditorium, 25-meter indoor pool, four gymnasiums, several play courts, fitness room, outdoor climbing wall, and 800 fixed computer terminals dispersed among two libraries, six science labs, five dedicated computer labs, as well as most other classrooms and a number of study areas, and a laptop program and wireless internet access. All applicants are personally interviewed before admission, and previous school records are required of all applicants.
Chinese International School - requires a brief explanation. We are
Chinese first and foremost by virtue of a curriculum that is
delivered in English and Putonghua (Mandarin). We are International
both through the demographics of our student body, which includes
approximately twenty-five nationalities, and through our commitment
to fostering international mindedness via curricular and
co-curricular offerings. As a School, we seek to be a friendly,
smiling community in which the highest standards of academic
excellence are embodied in confident, well-adjusted young people. I
believe that whether you read about our collaborative teaching model
in the Primary School, our arts program, our university placements,
or any other aspect of the School, you will find CIS to be a school
of uncommon quality and innovation.
Chinese International School is committed to the achievement of
academic excellence and is characterized and enriched by its
dual-language program in Chinese and English. The mission of Chinese
International School is to inspire students to a lifelong love of
learning.
The school encourages intellectual curiosity and independent,
critical and creative thinking which will maximize students’
potential and promote the growth of the whole person. The school
prepares its students to be compassionate, ethical and responsible
individuals, contributing to local and global communities,
respectful of other views, beliefs and cultures, and concerned to
make a difference in the world.
The CIS program prepares students exceptionally well for the
challenges of today's world. It aims to develop understanding and
encourages students to inquire and to think critically and
creatively. It strives for balance among the disciplines and for
balance between classroom and non-classroom learning.
A defining characteristic of the school is the fact that there are
no separate language or curriculum streams and all students pursue a
single program taught in both Chinese (Mandarin) and English. In
Reception to Year 2, equal time is devoted to the two languages. In
Years 3 to 6, the ratio shifts to 65% English and to 35% Chinese. In
the Secondary school, the amount of time spent on Chinese reduces
progressively but it remains compulsory and central to the program.
Traditional full-form characters are used, except for the teaching
of Chinese as a second language in the Secondary school when
simplified characters are used.
The school is committed to providing starting level Chinese courses
in all years, and students without prior knowledge of Chinese are
welcomed at the school.
Homework is carefully monitored to ensure that assignments are
constructive and that overall loads are not excessive.
For information about the school calendar, including typical
school-year holidays, please see Student Life.
CIS is located on the top of Braemar Hill, a quiet residential area
noted for its many schools. The school derives much of its sense of
community from its single campus focused around three central
courtyards. Opened in 1991, the campus commands spectacular views of
Victoria Harbor and the surrounding hills.
While the surrounding green areas are easily accessible for sporting
activities and field excursions, CIS is also within easy reach of
Hong Kong's dynamic urban centers. CIS is just five minutes by bus
or taxi from the Causeway Bay shopping district and Mass Transit
Rail (MTR) system; ten minutes from the historic Happy Valley
racecourse and playing fields; and fifteen minutes from Central, the
city's high-rise business hub.
