Copenhagen International SchoolIn 1963 CIS was founded as an independent English-language secondary school to serve the international community of Copenhagen. Ten years later a Junior School was established, and in 1993 the two schools merged to provide a complete Pre-K through IB educational program. The school is recognized and subsidized by the Danish State and is governed by an 11-member School Board. It is accredited by ECIS and NEASC and was a founding member of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. Pupils in Pre-K - grade 6 are taught in self-contained classrooms. Those in grades 7-10 have a departmentalized curriculum taught by teachers who are specialists in their fields. The program comprises language arts, maths, science, computers, social studies, French or German, Danish, art, physical education, library and music. French and German are taught in grades 6-12. English-as-a-second-Language is taught in small groups throughout all grades. The program of studies is largely academic and leads to a High School Diploma and an IB diploma at the end of grade 12. In the 11th and 12th grades all courses are International Baccalaureate subjects and include Art, Biology, Chemistry, Danish B, English A, French B, German B, History, Mathematics, Physics and Social Anthropology. Preparation for a limited range of IGCSE subjects is possible. Participation in cultural, athletic and service activities is encouraged.All staff members are fully qualified and experienced. Upon graduation, 95% of the students leave for university in the US, UK, Denmark or their home country.The school year is mid-August to mid-June. Within the school year pupils participate in trips both within Denmark and to other countries. Extra curricular activities center around drama, charity, computers, yearbook, journalism, art, sport, music, Model UN and math club. The cultural and historical features of Copenhagen are utilized to provide constant enhancement of the program. The facilities include science laboratories, two computer laboratories, a sports hall, a new library and outdoor play areas. The school is 15 minutes from the centre of Copenhagen and 30 minutes from the airport with easy access to greater Copenhagen by train.
