Learning Support Programme
The Heidelberg International School is an independent, co-educational day school serving the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region (Heidelberg, Mannheim, Ludwigshafen), as well as Karlsruhe. H. I. S. provides a full day academic programme to students of all nations and cultures. The curriculum is international and the language of instruction is English. H. I. S. serves the specific needs of internationally mobile families and multilingual students, and offers an alternative education to local families. The students learn respect for their own and other cultures, good work habits, openness and tolerance. H. I. S. is an International Baccalaureate World School authorised for the IB Diploma and the IB Primary Years Programme. The school also has Candidate Status for the IB for the Middle Years Programme. All three programmes encourage the intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of students. The school has a Primary School, which includes Early Primary 1 and 2 (four- and five-year-olds) and Grades 1-5 and a Secondary School (Grades 6 to 12). The curriculum includes language arts, mathematics, science, technology, humanities/social studies, personal, social and physical education, computer skills, music, library skills, and the creative arts. German is taught as a subject to all students. Spanish is taught to students from Grade 6 onwards. As well as classroom space, the school facilities opened in September 2008, provide a gymnasium and special facilities for science, music and art. The current facilities will allow an increase in student enrolment to 300 students. Applications for admission to H. I. S.are accepted throughout the year.
