The English-Speaking School of Lubumbashi


During the attempted coup of September 2002 and the ensuing year, ICSA lost 90% of its students. The school reopened in all grades levels K-12 in August 2003. ICSA is an independent K-12 co-educational day school governed by a nine-member Board of Directors (two of whom are appointed by the US Embassy, the school's sponsor) and established to serve the educational needs of the expatriate community in Abidjan The school offers an anglophone American-style curriculum, but remains flexible to meet local needs and opportunities. French is required at all levels, and ESOL instruction is provided throughout the school The average length of tenure is between three and five years. About 75% of the staff hold master's degrees Students at ICSA represent 15 nationalities, with approximately 33% Americans. Students stay at the school on an average two to three years The school year consists of 175 student days and runs from 20 August to 7 June. The students participate in Math Counts, SGA, NJHS, NHS, Green Earth Society, Model UN Community Service and various athletic activities and social events. The school also encourages community service and expects a minimum of eight hours service per year at the high school level The school moved to a new, purpose-built campus in the summer of 1990. This includes 37 classrooms including a music room, art room, health suite, middle school complex, three science laboratories, 10, 000 volume library, language and computer laboratories, swimming pool, tennis courts and playing fields Students who are in Abidjan and meet the academic requirements are considered for admission.
