The College of Engineering at Seoul National University Korea

Founded in 1946, The College of Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) has played a crucial role in Korea's technological development.

For those with more than a passing interest, in the intricacies of East Asia, modern Korea, is sure to evoke an  assortment of images: one of the original four Asian dragons, fiery food, brusque and passionate people, post World-War II geo-politics, the purest form of Confucianism, a country whose  relationship with its neighbours is as complex as its history, maker of products of fairly good value, and host to half of the World Cup.

As it is with all countries; these images only give a superficial view of the reality that lies beneath; it is impossible to  understand the mosaic in its entirety from glimpses of some of its better- known  places.

If the well-trodden paths to China and Japan don't appeal to you, and the brochure images have some allure, then Korea may be the right destination for you. If, moreover, engineering is your chosen field of study, then the College of Engineering at Seoul National University should be your unequivocal first choice.

First, to allay your practical-minded self-doubts about the intrinsic value of studying  in Korea, you can rest assured that Korea is, and will continue to be on an ever-larger scale, a rather important nation in the world. As Korea plays an increasingly larger role in the world economy, its culture - both past and present - is also emerging from the shadows of China's and Japan's, at least in the general Western perception of East Asia. There are plenty of statistics and stories to corroborate these claims, but if you've read this far, you probably won't need to see them repeated here.

Since its establishment in 1946, the College of Engineering (CaE) at Seoul National University (SNU) has played a pivotal role in Korea's rapid technological and economic development. With over 30,000 living graduates today, the COE is at the forefront of nearly every major technological and societal issue that confronts us. Today more than ever, the impact of technology on society cannot be overstated, and as Korea's leading  engineering institution, we are acutely aware of the critical and changing role of engineers in our global society.

The mission of the College of Engineering is to serve Korea and the world  by seeking new technologies, and by applying the knowledge to society in order to improve the quality of people's lives. The college administration, faculty and students unite to conduct scholarly research at the frontiers of technology, to make available the resources of the College and the expertise of our faculty, and to serve and provide leadership for the entire engineering profession, while maintaining our commitment to the highest standards of excellence. To pursue this mission, the College has undergone major restructuring and expansion since 1992. Overall student enrollment has doubled, and the number of departments at the under- graduate level has been reduced by merging similar  disciplines. With this  restructuring we hope to encourage research that crosses disciplines, and to provide a more integrated undergraduate curriculum that emphasizes not only engineering fundamentals, but also creativity and teamwork. The focus of the graduate curriculum still remains on research-oriented programs. Besides its obvious impact on graduate education, the research university environment adds a freshness and excitement to undergraduate courses that cannot be found in a solely teaching-oriented environment. Overall, the College has established twenty-two engineering research centres and institutes to augment the research efforts of our individual faculty. In addition, formal faculty and student exchange agreements, as well as joint research programmes, have been established with numerous universities and research institutes abroad to promote . international scholarly exchange and resource linkage. We invite you to find out more  about opportunities for study at the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, and about Korea.
