At Avonside we aim to provide
girls with choices and opportunities in a safe and supportive environment to
help them succeed in academic, sporting and cultural achievements. The
school values achievement, striving for excellence and full participation in
all aspects of school life. Girls are supported in developing responsibility
for their own learning by a highly qualified teaching staff. The focus is on
empowering students to participate confidently in a changing world. Students
are encouraged to take pride in themselves and their school.
Avonside is
enriched by being a culturally diverse community. The school fosters the
values of team work and caring for others. Avonside provides a wide curriculum which offers option choices from Year 9
and prepares girls for tertiary education, future careers and lifelong
learning. Languages such as French, German, Japanese, Spanish and
Latin as well as Te Reo Maori are offered on top of core curriculum subjects
such as English, mathematics, science, social sciences, arts, technology,
health and physical education. Girls are urged to excel in a positive and
focused learning environment. Hard work will bring rewards! They will need
to complete all class work and homework to be successful. The school has a beautifully restored historic main building and is set in
attractive grounds with mature trees and well kept gardens. The buildings
house up-to-date facilities for all courses including technology,
science, computing laboratories, a gymnasium and fitness centre, and a
modern library information centre with full e-mail/internet access.
International Students
Avonside Welcomes International Students at Years 10,
11, 12 and 13. International students have wonderful opportunities!
They experience a different culture and education
system and have the chance to make lifelong friends from around the world.
There will be challenges to meet but there will also be many rewards. They
will be able to live comfortably in two cultures and be truly international
citizens.
Avonside Girls' High School extends a warm welcome to
international students. We have a long tradition of accepting students from
many parts of the world and they have been happy and successful here. Avonside will ensure that international students are well cared for. They
will live with carefully chosen New Zealand families who will help them
learn English and adjust to a new culture. Special services are available to
help with problems and also to plan for the future.
We enjoy our association with international students
and know that there is much to be gained in terms of learning and
understanding when people of different nations live and work together.
At Avonside there are always
people who will help with problems that arise. The Director of International
Students is responsible for the students' admission, academic work and
general welfare at school.

arrange the students' board, meet her at the airport, help with uniform and
supervise her general welfare while she is in New Zealand.
