| Columba College School for Girls New Zealand
Columba College is one of New Zealand's
distinguished schools for girls with a long-established tradition of
academic excellence and outstanding all-round achievement.
Columba
is the school of choice for parents seeking proven academic excellence, a Church
School, a well-rounded education with opportunities for personal
development in co-curricular
activities, and programmes which equip students to succeed in the
world beyond school.
Columba College is a day
and boarding
school for girls from Years
7 to 13 with a co-educational Junior
School (Years 1 to 6). The school has a total roll of 550 approved by
the Ministry of Education which is comprised of approximately 430 girls in
Years 7 to 13 and 120 children in Years 1 to 6. Boarders are accepted from
Years 7 to 13, and International
students contribute cultural diversity and an international dimension
to school life.
The Years 7 to 13
curriculum is well-balanced and extensive for a school of Columba's size
and is designed to provide the girls with a well-rounded education as well
as the academic qualifications to prepare them for tertiary education and
their future careers.
Columba
College is a caring and supportive Christian
School where respect for others, courtesy and consideration,
independence, self-discipline and responsibility are fostered. Hard work
is encouraged and achievement praised. The family atmosphere of the school
does much to create a sense of belonging and to engender a strong and
loyal school spirit.
Columba College is
experienced in the delivery of high quality education and pastoral care to
International students. It welcomes the cultural diversity and
international dimension that its International students contribute to
school life.
International students have
been attending Columba for well over a decade and are an important and
integral part of the College. The majority of students come from Asia and
South East Asia.
Many of the International
students who have graduated from Columba have gone on to complete degrees
at a New Zealand or overseas University and are now involved in a wide
variety of careers internationally.
The College is keen to
maintain an up-to-date network of its International Old Girls. Please

in Touch if you are an International Old Girl.
English Language
Support and ESOL Tuition
English Language Support
and ESOL Tuition are provided by the Dean of International Students and
ESOL Teacher for Years 7 to 13 International Student, Ms A. Tait, B.A.,
M.App.Sci., Dip.Tchg., TESOL Certificate (Otago Polytechnic), Cambridge
R.S.A. (EFL) Certificate. Ms Tait is responsible for assessing the English
language needs of each International student and for arranging the
necessary ESOL programme. This may take the form of specialist individual
tuition, small groups, a separate Year level class for English or in-class
other subject support.
Special classes are run
each year at school for International students wishing to sit TOEFL and
IELTS examinations. Girls are also prepared for the Pitman ESOL
examinations.
A number of International
students also choose to have private tuition in Speech and Drama with one
of the three private Speech and Drama teachers at school.
The Dean of International
Students is a key person in the pastoral care of all International girls
and meets with them regularly.
Other key people are the
School Counsellor, Deans, form teachers and, in the case of boarders, the
House Manager and House staff.
Every effort is made to
ensure that each girl feels welcome and well settled, and that she has a
course of study that meets her needs and abilities.
All new students are met on
arrival at Dunedin airport and are provided with a "buddy" for
the first few weeks of School. The Dean of International Students also
gives each girl an orientation programme which involves discussing her
course, introducing her to her teachers and a tour of the campus.
"Code of
Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students"
The above Code was produced
by the New Zealand Ministry of Education to provide a framework for
educational providers for the pastoral care of International students. The
Code is established under section 238F of the Education Act 1989. The Act
requires that an educational provider must be a signatory to the Code to
enrol international students who need study permits.
Columba College is a
signatory to the Code of Practice. For more information about the Code of
Practice, visit the New
Zealand Ministry of Education website.
