What
better place than New Zealand to come to for an education and a
qualification centred
around horses? Our
country has so much to offer the international student, and in Palmerston
North (known as New Zealand's Knowledge City because of the wealth of
tertiary education on offer) there is the opportunity to pursue a career
in the equine industry and gain a qualification which is recognised world
wide.
Take
a look at the website: www.kyrewood.co.nz
and you will find information about one of the country's leading equine
training establishment, the Kyrewood Equestrian Centre Ltd New Zealand.
Kyrewood is accredited to the N.Z. Qualifications Authority (NZQA),
and therefore the Certificate courses on offer are issued by this
government body. NZQA
certificates are acknowledged and accepted all over the world.
Kyrewood
was the first Private Training Establishment in New Zealand to be
accredited to teach and assess equine certificates.
Since 1997 its roll has increased steadily with both New Zealand
and International students.
They have come from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, America and
Mauritius, and after gaining their certificates many have returned to
their own country to pursue employment in the equine industry.
Kyrewood
has been purpose-built as a training centre.
Its facilities are first class and cater for training in both the
racing and equestrian sectors.
The main property consists of 100 acres of flat land, incorporating
dressage and showjumping arenas and a cross-country course, all designed
to train both riders and teachers in the three major riding disciplines. For those students anxious to find
employment in the racing industry a 1000metre training track and an
eight-horse walking machine provide valuable "hands on" experience.
Five stables and a total of twenty two tie-up stalls cater for the
large range of horses owned by Kyrewood.
There are over fifty horses and ponies on the property, ranging
from the very quiet ones for teaching the beginner riders, through
well-performed competition horses for the competitive riders, and retired
racehorses who, after successful racing careers have found their niche
teaching prospective jockeys in the art of race and trackwork riding. Add to these a range of broodmares
and foals, yearlings and other youngstock as yet untrained, and the
opportunities are limitless when it comes to training the prospective
horseperson. For
international students the most popular and suitable course to begin with
is Stable Practice.
It is not necessary for the student to have any prior knowledge or
experience of riding or horsemanagement before coming to Kyrewood.
Subjects covered include catching, grooming and saddling a horse,
feeding, stabling, riding, learning about the horse's body systems,
shoeing and some lifeskill units.
Elective units allow the student to specialize in either the
sporthorse or racing industry.
Kyrewood's
Directors, Fred and Pauline Gorton, both have a lifetime of experience in
many areas of the horse world, as competitors, teachers and
administrators. Of
particular interest to them is the racing industry, where they have owned
and trained a small team of gallopers.
They have also provided the early education for several prominent
jockeys. Larry Cassidy, one of Australia's leading
riders, and closer to home the Awapuni jockey Bruce Herd both started
their early riding days at Kyrewood.
Learning
on a quiet, well mannered horse (who lost interest in going fast once he
retired from the racing scene) makes for a much more enjoyable riding
experience than meeting the racecourse and the racehorse all at once, and
for the first time.
A quiet canter around Kyrewood's private training track is much
easier on the nerves when you are beginning to learn the art of racetrack
riding.
