International students attending Marlborough Girls' College have
their own Director of International Students offering support, advice
and guidance. International students are "buddied" with a local girl
upon arrival at Marlborough Girl's College. The Principal or Deputy
Principal also keeps close contact with parents.
International Students are also required to have a legal guardian,
appointed by her parents, (often the College) to look after her
interests.
Getting StartedMarlborough Girls' College provides international students with the best
educational opportunities, with qualified staff and up-to-date
resources. Every attempt is made to assist students with their study,
and offer counselling and support in all areas.
When a student to whom English is a second language first arrives,
she is referred for assessment and an individual study programme is
prepared for her.
Some
students with limited English may spend most of their time at first
studying English with fully trained and qualified English for Speakers
of Other Languages Teachers. All students are placed in a form class and
are mainstreamed into Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Music
or Art as soon as possible. Careful selection of subjects is very
important and guidance and advice is given to all students. Some
subjects are heavily language orientated and students often find them
more difficult in the first year at College.
International Students' Department Staff provide support to regular
classroom teachers and assist in the provision of suitable resources for
students.
Private tutoring in individual subjects and in English can also be
arranged at parent's request, at an additional cost.
Reports are sent each term to parents of International students. The
College welcomes contact with families and parents and is always happy
to discuss any questions or concerns that may arise.
Admission RequirementsStudents are required to prove that they are sufficiently proficient in
English to undertake their proposed course of study. Prospective
students must show that they have achieved appropriate educational
standards/qualifications in their own country, equivalent to a minimum
of New Zealand standard.
In addition, students must be of good character and in good health,
and willing to meet the required standards of conduct both at the
College and in a boarding or homestay situation.
