Sacred Heart Girls' College Hamilton New Zealand
Sacred Heart holds a National Award for Excellence in Pastoral Care of
its International Students. International students of all faiths are warmly welcomed!

Sacred Heart Girls' College, Hamilton has a proud tradition of
innovation and excellence extending back to 1884, when it was opened as
a Secondary School by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. It is
also proud of the place it holds today as a very successful educator of
young women. Our philosophy and aims are expressed in our motto, "Age Quod Agis" -whatever you do, do to the best of your ability. It is a College where excellence is pursued and celebrated within a
caring and Christian atmosphere. High expectations, academic, sporting
and cultural are part of the daily fabric of school life. The richness
and variety of the opportunities offered, contribute to the formation of
well-rounded and self-confident young women who are ready to meet the
challenges of the 21st Century as women of Virtue and Knowledge. At Sacred Heart we take a personal interest in all our international
students ensuring that they settle into school and life away from home.
The College
Since its establishment in 1884, Sacred Heart Girls' College has offered
young women of the Waikato area a challenging education integrated in
the Catholic faith. The maximum roll is 900. Students from The Catholic contributing primary
schools are accepted, as are Catholic students from other primary and
intermediate schools.
The
college is well equipped to cater for the needs of all students. The
school has committed teachers who expect high standards from the
students and excellent academic results are achieved. The school has up
to date facilities, including several computing suites, technology
rooms, music suite, Creative Arts Centre, gymnasium, astro- turf tennis
and netball courts.
Academic Programme Secondary school education is a five-year program. Students may enter at
any level. Subject choices should be seen both as ensuring entry to as
wide a range of senior options as possible, and providing an interesting
program which meets the student's needs at an appropriate level. Detailed information regarding courses in the Senior School is available
in a Senior Course booklet. Option evenings are held each year to assist
students with their decision making. The school's results significantly
exceed the national average and those of similar schools.
Pastoral Care/Accommodation
The Director and Administrator of International students offer 24 hour
care and support.
The school is the holder of the National Award for Excellence in
Pastoral Care and the finalist in the Excellence for Student Support
Award 2011.
An International Peer Support system is in place to help the students
integrate into the school community and orientation programmes, as well
as a residential weekend away, also help make the International student
feel welcome. The school can assist with finding excellent homestay accommodation. All
homestays are police vetted and visited twice a year. Regular surveys
are conducted to ensure that students are happy in their selected
accommodation.
Special Character
SacredHeart Girls' College specifically offers an education within a
Caring Christian Community -our three C's of difference.
It is a Catholic school where each person is cared for and valued as a
member of its Christian community. Students of all faiths or no faith
are welcomed.
The College has a chaplain who joins the College to celebrate a school
liturgy once a term.
Sport and Culture Our
college has first class facilities for physical education and allied
sports with its gymnasium, fitness studio, tennis and netball courts and
use of Steele Park. Annual college sports days are held for swimming and athletics, and all
students are encouraged to participate in these at an appropriate level.
Some students from the college go on to Waikato and national level
competitions in these areas. All practices of the major sports are held outside class times, with
games being played after school and in the weekends. Sacred Heart is justly proud of its record of achievements in sporting
competitions. Students have been selected as Waikato representatives in
most sports, and many have gone on to win national and international
honours. Our aim is to encourage all students to enter for at least one activity.
Netball is particularly strong in the school, with approx 35 teams
fielded every Saturday morning, giving opportunities at all levels, from
top grade to social. Senior students are trained as umpires and scorers,
as well as junior team coaches. Teams are coached and supervised in: athletics, badminton, basketball,
