Waikato Institute of Technology has three main campuses in Hamilton - a
main city site which sits on the hill overlooking the city centre, Avalon
on the northern outskirts of the city, and a horticultural campus at
Hamilton Gardens. In addition, it has regional operations at Auckland, Te
Kuiti and Thames.
The city site accommodates programmes in Business Studies,
Media Arts, Communication, Information Technology, Nursing and Health,
Science, Office Technology and Mori Studies. The city site also includes
leased facilities in an adjacent office building in Ward Street which
houses the Community and Continuing Education, Hairdressing and Tourism
Departments.
A central feature of the city campus is the library
specifically designed to meet students' requirements well into the 21st
century, with internet and electronic data access, as well as a
comprehensive collection of books and serials.
The Avalon campus, is on the outskirts of the city near
the fast-growing residential and industrial areas of Pukete and Te Rapa,
was purpose-built for trades-related training. The 56 hectare site
includes specialist workshops for automotive, carpentry, joinery,
plumbing, mechanical engineering and heavy diesel training.
The Sport and Exercise Science complex on the Avalon
campus offers some of the most up-to-date sports training and testing
facilities in the country, and enhances the institute's position with the
New Zealand Academy of Sport. A recently completed addition to the
facilities at the Avalon Campus is the Centre for Hospitality which
provides training in catering and hospitality and includes a training
restaurant open to the public.
Other specialist training area on the Avalon campus
include the equestrian facilities. The Waikato is known as the centre of
the country's top horse breeders and trainers, and the Waikato Institute
of Technology has built an Equine Education Centre, complete with 65 x 45
metre indoor riding arena, together with stabling and supporting
facilities for 40 horses. In addition, the institute provides agricultural
training, with a purpose-built animal handling facility, with extensive
areas of farmland.
The third Hamilton campus, the Horticultural Education
Centre, is situated amidst the 58 hectares of Hamilton Gardens. This
environment allows students to gain experience in a wide variety of
horticultural activities, and the Centre specialises in amenity
horticulture, arboriculture and floristry.
