South African School

Dihlabeng Christian School

Dihlabeng Christian School is situated in Clarens, a small town on South Africa's northern border with Lesotho. The school has developed as part of Dihlabeng Christian Church's belief that it is God's plan to use His Church to change individual lives and thus nations, and so display His wisdom and glory.

The school was started in 2000 with the aim of serving the poor and bringing hope to the hopeless. Beginning with just seven Basotho children, we met in the garage of a private home until a house in the local township was obtained. The school grew steadily in 2000 and at the end of the year we had 19 children attending full-time. Growth continued and a larger building became necessary. In July 2001 the school was moved to a local municipal farm in Clarens, which gave us space for future expansion.

Including the Pre-Primary unit, 2014 will see 150 children on role and 24 staff from both black and white cultures. Some staff have been sponsored to do their training through generous donations from the UK. The school's aim is to provide a multi-cultural staff working in harmony as a positive role model for the children.

School Curriculum

Dihlabeng School is a non profit making independent school. All lessons in the Pre-Primary (Grades RR & R), the Foundation Phase (Grades 1 - 3) and the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 - 7) are planned according to the South African National Curriculum.

We apply a theme-based approach to learning in the Pre-Primary and Foundation Phases, whilst lessons in the Intermediate Phase are more subject based. Outings and excursions related to the topics and subjects take place on a regular basis and provide much fun and excitement in the school term. Afrikaans, Sesotho and English are taught in the school with English as the language of instruction. The children in the first four years have all instructions translated into Sesotho. (Lesotho, bordering Clarens, is inhabited by the Basotho people who speak Sesotho.)

Educating for Life and Godliness

We believe we are preparing the next generation to love, respect and learn from other cultures as they grow together.

Our vision is for a school with growing numbers of children and with a staff from many different nations working together in a strong multi-cultural team.

By providing a well-rounded and stimulating education, the school is giving hope for the future and a fair chance in tomorrow's job market for today's children. In this way the school is helping to break down the hold that poverty and disadvantage has over many families. The school, together with the church, also provides an environment in which children can meet Jesus Christ and develop a personal relationship with Him.

We want all the glory to go to God through what He achieves at the school. It is our prayer that we will see people changed by His love and that the fruit of that will be seen in the lives and future of the children.

Activities

The school has a creative slant and children are encouraged to express themselves freely and enjoy being who God made them to be. Art and craft lessons, music and singing, drama and dance are a vital part of school life. Lessons are given in computer skills and technology. The school runs a variety of clubs, including a small gardening club where children are taught how to plant and look after their own vegetables.

Sports include: soccer, netball, mini-cricket, tag-rugby, volleyball, cross country and athletics. Matches are held between our teams and teams from local schools during the year.
