The Department of Psychology
at the University of Kent offers a supportive, dynamic and diverse
environment for creative research and learning. We use a variety of
methods including experimental, survey and archival approaches. Most of
our PhD students are funded by a combination of United Kingdom ESRC
awards, departmental studentships and part-time teaching.
Applications are welcome for our coursework Masters degrees, which start
in mid-September, and for postgraduate research to begin any time but
preferably in September.
Our Graduate Programmes
We offer six coursework Masters degrees (MSc) covering a broad spectrum
of psychological disciplines:
· MSc in Cognitive Psychology/Neuropsychology
· MSc in Forensic Psychology
· MSc in Group Processes and Intergroup Relations
· MSc in Health Psychology
· MSc in Research Methods in Psychology
· MSc in Social and Applied Psychology
These consist of advanced training in statistics and methodology,
specialist courses, and an empirical research project. They are
excellent training courses if you intend to pursue a higher degree by
research or a career in the human services.
All our taught MSc programmes can be taken either full-time (for one
year) or part-time (over two years).
We also offer supervision for full-time or part-time research degrees (MPhil
and PhD) in the following areas:
· Cognitive Psychology/Neuropsychology
· Developmental Psychology
· Forensic Psychology
· Health Psychology
· Social Psychology

Our department
The Psychology Department has built a strong research reputation in the
areas of cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, developmental
psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, and social
psychology (including group processes and intergroup relations) - with
two formally constituted research centres. Our research was graded 4 in
its last national research evaluation exercise, with the social
psychology research group graded as 5*, the highest grade available. We
have 30 teaching staff, 15 research staff, 46 MSc students, and 42 PhD
students.
As a postgraduate researcher, you will have the opportunity to become
part of a specialist group, attending group research meetings and
becoming involved in ongoing programmes of research. You will be able to
learn more about research in psychology by attending the Thursday
afternoon research seminars given by visiting speakers and to gain
teaching experience (and earn money) working as a part-time seminar
leader or practical demonstrator in the Department. Finally, you will
benefit in your research from our well-established links with outside
organisations such as the Prison Service, the National Health Service,
and local schools, and from the use of our excellent laboratories and
equipment.
Our facilities
Our facilities for both laboratory and field research are outstanding.
The Department has a new building housing state-of-the-art laboratories
and teaching facilities. Our social psychology suite contains three
fully equipped colour video studios and 39 research laboratories all
containing networked computers.
We have a fully-equipped suite of cognitive laboratories, complete with
EEG/ERP (event related brain potential) equipment, eye tracking
equipment, four Dell workstations, and soundproofed cubicles.
We have a dedicated health psychology suite that has been equipped with
Bio-Pac computing equipment to allow for a range of physiological
measures to be taken during stressful and other tasks.
Our location
The Department of Psychology is based on an attractive and friendly
campus overlooking the city of Canterbury, 90 minutes from London and 30
minutes from ferry, Eurostar and Channel Tunnel links to mainland
Europe.
From the University, it is only a short walk into the city centre where
you will find shops, bars and restaurants. The picturesque costal town
of Whitstable with its world famous oysters is five miles to the north.
Situated on 300 acres of parkland in the midst of the Kent countryside,
the University of Kent's Canterbury campus combines modern architecture
with open green spaces, courtyards, gardens, ponds and woodland. The
University was founded in 1965 and today has 15, 000 students of over 110
different nationalities.
Accommodation is available on campus and throughout the city. As well as
excellent support, health and welfare services, the campus offers a wide
range of leisure activities including sports, clubs and societies,
cinema and music. There is a well-equipped sports centre, with a fitness
suite, dance studio, squash courts and sports halls. The Gulbenkian
Theatre hosts a variety of performances including many well known
comedians, actors and musicians. There is a cinema on campus and a range
of bars and eateries.
Degree ceremonies take place in the historic setting of Canterbury
Cathedral.

Entry requirements
The normal postgraduate entry requirement is an Upper Second (2:1) or
First Class Honours degree in Psychology or a closely related
discipline.
Applicants for the MSc in Forensic Psychology, the MSc in Health
Psychology and the MSc in Research Methods in Psychology must be
eligible for the Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) of the British
Psychological Society (BPS). If you are unsure about whether your degree
