The Department of Linguistic, Cultural &
Translation Studies at the University of Surrey offers the opportunity
to study a range of subjects related to the linguistic and cultural
aspects of human communication, at all levels from Undergraduate through
taught Certificate, Diploma, and Masters programmes, and on to
independent research at Masters and Doctoral level.
Our expertise equips us well to offer this breadth of programmes: the

The Department
Work within the Department focuses on three closely related areas:
Culture, Media and Communication, the application of Linguistics to
language pedagogy around the world, and Translation Studies. As we are a
forward-looking university, it is natural that our programmes exhibit an
awareness and successful application of advanced technology to our
fields of expertise. As examples, participants on our taught MAs in
Audiovisual Translation and Monolingual Subtitling & Audio Description
have access to state-of-the-art software for the practical components of
their programmes, whilst students on our BA in Culture, Media and
Communication benefit from a professional-standard television studio and
editing suite.

Our BA in Culture, Media and Communication (CMC) is a popular choice
which, with its blend of practical filming and editing modules and its
theoretical explorations of film and other mass media, prepares students
for a range of careers in the media industries. More information on the

The television studio
A new programme from September 2005, our BA in Culture, Media and
Communication with Professional English draws on the strengths of the BA
in Culture, Media and Communication, while adding a focus on the
increasing importance of English as the world's lingua franca. This
programme is of equal interest to native and non-native speakers of
English, and incorporates modules aimed at students seeking careers in
journalism, advertising and the creative industries with the opportunity
to engage in contemporary controversies regarding global communication.

The undergraduate programme in Modern Languages with Translation is a
new degree from September 2005. It is intended for able students of
languages with an interest in translation (including audio-visual
translation) and interpreting. The languages are studied to an advanced
level and the translation element is ideal preparation for later
specialization at postgraduate level prior to entering the translation
and interpreting profession.
At the postgraduate level we offer the MA in Russian Language and
Society, for which we pool our resources with those of the Department of
European Studies and Modern Languages at the University of Bath. This
programme combines intensive study of the Russian language with an
in-depth analysis of socio-political, economic and cultural developments
in Post-communist Russia, one of the largest areas of opportunity in the
global economy. There are two alternative tracks depending on students'
language proficiency: one for graduates with a degree in Russian who
wish to combine advanced level language study with learning about
Russian society and politics, the other for graduates without Russian
who seek a good working knowledge of the Russian language and
specialised knowledge of Russian society and politics. The programme
includes a six-week period in Moscow, taking modules in Russian and
Politics taught by academics from the highly rated Moscow State
Institute for International Relations (MGIMO).
We are also introducing, from September 2005, a new MA in Intercultural
Communication with International Business. This combines our
department's internationally recognised research and teaching strengths
with that of the University's world-renowned School of Management, and
aims to provide overseas and United Kingdom graduates with an enhanced
knowledge of language and its communicative contexts for research and
business purposes. It is suitable for graduates in fields such as
English, Film & Media Studies, Psychology, and Modern Languages aiming
to acquire the advanced communicative competencies necessary to function
within the global business environment.
Applied Linguistics (TESOL)
The multimedia lab
The Applied Linguistics Research Group (formerly the English Language
Institute) is a specialised postgraduate unit offering two taught
postgraduate programmes of proven vocational value to English language
teachers who wish to further their careers by gaining a higher
qualification in the field. Our staff have a long-held reputation for
excellence in distance education which allows students working in
countries in all parts of the world to benefit from high quality
programmes which are the passport to a successful career in ELT.
Our MA in Linguistics (TESOL) is offered in two modes, either distance
learning or onsite. For the distance learning mode, there is no
requirement for residence in the United Kingdom. The programme provides
a solid theoretical background enabling the student to draw connections
between linguistic theory and classroom practice, so as to be able to
take responsibility for a wide range of pedagogical decisions based on
theoretical principles. The MA culminates in a research study for the
dissertation: you can read previous graduates' comments on our
programmes and can judge for yourself the quality of our students'
dissertations.
For those wishing to develop a career on the management side of English
Language Teaching, our highly regarded MSc in ELT Management is of value
to anyone who currently has responsibilities in management, budgeting,
leading teams of teachers, or developing and marketing new programmes.
Teachers who have no management experience, but who wish to develop
their careers along the management track, will acquire skills to allow
them to apply for posts as Language School Principals or Directors, work
within Ministries of Education, or undertake roles in related fields
such as publishing or language testing, in a management capacity.
Because most of our applicants for this programme wish to continue their
careers uninterrupted, this programme is available in distance learning
mode only; again, there is no requirement for residence in the United
Kingdom. There are easy payment schemes for both distance programmes.
Translation Studies
Surrey's internationally-renowned Centre for Translation Studies,
established in 1982, offers a range of programmes at undergraduate and
postgraduate levels in translation, audiovisual translation and
interpreting. Staffed by leading researchers in Translation Studies, the
Centre is proud of its professional links: applied classes are taught by
experienced translators and subtitlers who bring their professional
expertise into the classroom. We offer three taught MA programmes, in
Translation, Audiovisual Translation, and, new from September 2005,
Monolingual Subtitling & Audio Description.

Our highly regarded MA in Translation has since 1985 been a
well-established route to a choice of national and international job
opportunities and is designed to equip language graduates with the
comprehensive range of practical and theoretical skills they will need
to work as professional translators. Always with English as the pivot
language, languages on offer for the MA in Translation and MA in
Audiovisual Translation are: Chinese, Greek, Norwegian, Spanish,
Swedish. In addition, French, German and Russian are available on the MA
in Translation
Our MA in Audiovisual Translation combines the strengths of our
experience in translation theory with a professional training in
interlingual subtitling. The programme provides a broad introduction to
the subject, ranging from dubbing and voice-over technology to
surtitling and subtitling.
The editing suite
The context for our MA in Monolingual Subtitling & Audio Description is
the increased attention which is being paid to accessibility of
information and entertainment for users who are deaf or hard-of-hearing
or those who are blind or partially-sighted. The programme provides a
thorough training for graduates wishing to work in monolingual
subtitling of television programmes and films and in audio description
for film and live theatre performances. Both theoretically challenging
and of practical value, this is an academically innovative field. On
both these programmes, you will be using state-of-the-art software.
