You will learn from former U. S. Supreme Court Clerks, prosecutors and defense attorneys, as well as renowned legal scholars and theorists. The wealth and breadth of their experience and expertise make the classroom – and the law school as a whole – a place where rigorous study, academic excellence and collegiality thrive. While there are foundational courses all students will take, we strive for innovation, providing first-year students the opportunity to take electives in the spring semester and offering a wide selection of courses for those interested in a particular area of the law. The law school offers a number of joint degrees, in which you can earn your J. D. and master’s degree from Seattle University at the same time. Students admitted through the program are supported by the Academic Resource Center. Hands-on Learning Our curriculum is enhanced by the experiential opportunities available. Our clinical program is ranked in the Top 20 and offers a variety of courses, giving students the chance to represent real clients. The Ronald A. Peterson Law Clinic is home to a ground-breaking Mental Health Court Clinic, the first Indian Wills Clinic in the country, and a Civil Rights Amicus Clinic, in which students will participate in the planning and writing of amicus briefs on important civil rights cases from across the country. The development of these programs follows closely upon the program's recent expansion into the areas of domestic violence, immigration, human rights, and small business development.
Equally important, the school offers an extensive externship program
with placements at a variety of civil, criminal and judicial settings in
Seattle, Washington state, the nation, and the world.
Internship and externships are available at sites ranging from
Anchorage, Alaska, to Washington, D. C. , and from Cambodia to Costa
Rica. The externship experience helps the student move from law school
to practice more easily. Both the faculty supervisor and the site
supervisor guide the extern in reflecting on experiences in practice.
Committed to Social Justice Our students are committed to making a difference. They understand the responsibility that comes with their education and want to be leaders in creating a more just world. Law school students are volunteering their time, serving as mentors who helped create Seattle’s first Youth Traffic Court, playing chess after school with underprivileged youth and teaching citizenship classes at a nearby community center.
Much of this work begins at our Access to Justice Institute, which
inspires all students to work for justice, no matter where their careers
take them. ATJI links students with volunteer and pro bono
opportunities, connect students with the equal justice community and
educates the law school and wider community about pressing social
justice issues. Seattle University School of Law is the only law school in the state to offer a post-graduate fellowship for a graduate to work with an organization on a specific social justice project involving underserved or marginalized individuals or communities. The fellowship enables students to protect the rights of the most vulnerable and support legal services agencies that struggle for funding. The Public Interest Law Foundation award grants to place students in summer internships at agencies ranging from Northwest Justice Project to the Death Penalty Litigation Clinic and the Corporation for Enterprise Development in Washington, D. C. Seattle University School of Law is the most diverse law school in the Northwest.
