Kerikeri High School New Zealand

International - Why Us?

Kerikeri High School has high standards and a proven track record of academic achievement but what makes us unique is the Kerikeri environment and our highly regarded Sailing Academy.

Kerikeri is a vibrant, bustling town of about 10,000 people located in the beautiful Bay of Islands in northern New Zealand approximately 45 minutes by plane or 3 hours by car north of Auckland. Originally home to Maori villages, Kerikeri was one of the first places settled by European missionaries in the early 1800s. Kemp House and The Stone Store are the oldest buildings of their kind in New Zealand.

The warm sub-tropical climate is ideal for fruit growing and there is a long established horticultural industry based on successful citrus and kiwifruit production. World-class sailing, fishing, and diving are available in the Bay of Islands. Kerikeri has a unique lifestyle with numerous cafes, boutique shops, artists, and galleries.

Kerikeri High School is located in the scenic, historic Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand. We have a dedicated professional staff of 100 who provide a full range of academic, sporting and cultural programmes to our students from Year 7 to Year 13. Our spacious, modern campus is located in the heart of the Kerikeri township.

We are proud of our school and we strive to create a caring environment. Our school has an excellent record in all subject areas as well as sport, debating, drama, problem solving and many more extra-curricular activities. We work positively to help all students achieve their goals. We also work actively to prepare students for future challenges.

It is our policy to welcome students from all countries and many international friendships have been made. Students from Germany, China, Brazil, Austria, Japan, Vanuatu, Korea, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Tahiti, India, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, The Czech Republic, and The United States of America have met together in our international centre.

We are the only school in New Zealand with a Sailing Academy incorporated in the school programme. Students come from all over the world to sail and study.

About the School

The school is built on eight hectares of land. This gives plenty of space for recreation and sports.

It is a co-educational, state school ranging from Year 7 to Year 13. We're proud of our academic record and the facilities. We aim to enable students to be responsible citizens and have the skills to take full advantage of life's opportunities.

There is a full range of academic subjects offered as well as subjects like Outdoor Education and Drama. You can enrol for New Zealand qualifications. Most students study 4 to 6 subjects.

We include computer technology in most subjects. There are over 200 networked computers throughout the school with broadband internet access for all students. The library resources are all searchable through the school's intranet.

There is a new performing arts suite for drama and music. The Theatre Arts Academyoperates every Friday for Year13 Drama students There is an exciting new building for art, design and technology. There is a large swimming complex with a dive pool. Year 13 physical education students use this for their scuba diving course.

There are many sports available at school or with sports clubs in the local community. We have both summer and winter sports so not all sports are played all the time. We are proud of our jazz band, musical concerts, debating groups and drama performances.

There are also opportunities to join cultural groups in the community. It is possible to choose a course with a focus on outdoor activities.

The Sailing Academy

The main difference is our Sailing Academy established in 2000. If you can sail and want to broaden your sailing knowledge and experience, you can join the Academy. You will study 4 or 5 academic subjects and also sailing theory and practice. You will sail small boats and keelers on lakes and the open conditions of the Bay of Islands.

Kerikeri High School has a 25 year history of sailing and has produced many professional sailors and people working in the sailing industry. Highlights have been 7 New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship titles and 5 Interdominion Secondary Schools Championship titles in the past 10 years.
